Why Does My Child Have Nosebleeds?<\/h2>\n

Nosebleeds (epistaxis)<\/strong> are very common in children aged 3 to 10 years old. They can look scary, however<\/strong> they are usually not serious. In this article,<\/strong> we explain how to stop your child\u2019s nosebleed effectively and, in addition,<\/strong> when to seek medical attention.<\/p>\n

The most frequent causes of nosebleeds in children<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n

Nose picking<\/p>\n

Nose blowing or sneezing<\/p>\n

Dry and cold air<\/p>\n

Allergy medications<\/p>\n

Trauma to the nose<\/p>\n

\n

How to Stop the Nosebleed?<\/h2>\n

Firstly,<\/strong> stay calm and reassure your child.<\/p>\n

Have your child sit upright in a chair or on your lap, and at the same time<\/strong> tilt the head slightly forward. Do not lean back, because<\/strong> this may cause blood to flow down the throat, leading to gagging, coughing, or vomiting.<\/p>\n

Gently pinch the soft part of the nose (just below the bony ridge).<\/p>\n

Keep pressure for about 10 minutes; if you stop too soon,<\/strong> bleeding may start again.<\/p>\n

After the nosebleed, encourage your child to rest quietly for a couple of hours. Moreover,<\/strong> discourage nose-blowing, picking, rubbing, or rough play.<\/p>\n

In addition to applying pressure,<\/strong> you may use a Stop H\u00e9mo\u00ae hemostatic swab.<\/strong> When in contact with blood, the swab gelifies and releases calcium ions, supporting the natural clotting process. It is simple to use at all ages:<\/p>\n

Twist the swab and insert it into the bleeding nostril.<\/p>\n

Apply pressure for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

Remove gently after 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

If needed, moisten the swab with saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) to ease insertion.<\/p>\n

Should I Call a Doctor?<\/h2>\n

Most nosebleeds can be cared for at home. Nevertheless,<\/strong> you should consult a doctor if your child:<\/p>\n

Has frequent or heavy nosebleeds<\/p>\n

May have inserted an object into the nose (e.g., marbles, beads)<\/p>\n

Recently started taking a new medicine<\/p>\n

Bleeds as a result of a fall or head injury<\/p>\n

Keeps bleeding after two continuous 10-minute compressions<\/p>\n

Appears pale, dizzy, or loses consciousness<\/p>\n

Bleeds from both nostrils or has blood flowing into the throat<\/p>\n
